Landscape Design Project

8 lessons

Introduction

The aim of this lesson is to get you out and about looking for potential sites for your design ideas. Most importantly, it’s about investigating each site with ‘fresh senses’, almost like you are experiencing it for the first time. We suggest using sites that are easy for you to access (even during Covid restrictions) and that you have some kind of personal connection with.

You Need

  • Prompt sheet, including space for sketching
  • Something to lean on (for drawing/writing)
  • A pen/pencil/device of your choice
  • A camera (or phone camera)

Think About

  • Using all of your senses to get a fresh perspective of each space
  • Opportunities that each space may present

Let's do something!

  1. 1

    Find a few sites

Decide on a few sites that are worth developing/changing through landscape design

    Find a few sites

Chris's example of finding four sites

  2. 2

    Experience the sites

Visit each site and do the following:

    a. Spend 10 mins drawing each site you visit, this could be either a series of quick sketches or a more in-depth study. Don’t worry about the quality of the drawings - we are using drawing to ‘tune in’ to the site

    b. Use the prompts (or the handout) to record as much data as possible

    Senses/features include:

    • What do you smell?
    • What do you hear?
    • What do you see?
    • What textures do you see?
    • What colours do you see?
    • What people use this space?
    • What animals use this space?
    • What plants do you see?
    Experience the sites
