Making your garland bracelet

  1. 1

    Surface Detail

I noticed a connection between my covid virus drawing and the Test 3 garland design and decided the patterns should transpose into a bracelet design well. I stayed with the smaller scale test size as the inner diameter is flexible enough to fit over my hand.

I wanted it to be more rigid than the test, so glued together two layers of watercolour paper.

On one side I drew the covid design and painted it in watercolours. I used the original test piece 3 and overlay to make sure the ‘heads’ matched up with the circles on my painted image.

    What about the back?

    • You'll need to make a decision about both of your surfaces. I painted the other side of mine in graduated reds.
    • Once the paint had dried I folded up my circle into quarters, then again into 8ths.
    • I drew on my design and realised that the paper was too thick to cut well, so I unfolded the garland once into quarters and redrew the design onto the missing quarter. I then cutout the outer edges of the design. It was too thick to do the finer parts of the detail towards the center, so I unfolded once more.
    • Once I had the outer cuts, I redrew the design onto any missing areas and finish cutting out.
    • Then unfold and admire your double sided bracelet!

    The Finished Piece

    • Push the bracelet into a small bowl to get a slight curve. This helped me get it over my hand and creates deeper 3D form.
    • I also stuck the designs on my window, shared photos on social media, and invited others to do the same. Think about sharing with us and the world too.
    • Keep connected whānau and enjoy your inclusive people garlands/window ware!
