Why Gouache?

Gouache has properties different to both acrylic paint and watercolours, allowing a different style of painting.

Acrylic paint has a shiny, glossy appearance and can be applied thickly to create surface textures, while gouache is soft and flat, drying flat and matte where it can't be watered down to look translucent such as watercolours (Skillshare Blog, 2021).

This gives the painter different opportunities where it is ideal for action and gestural paintings, as seen in the videos below.

Tips & tricks

  • Gouache dries fast. Remember that gouache will dry out fast when exposed to direct sunlight and when exposed to air, so keep the tubes sealed in a glass jar when you aren't using them
  • Plan before you paint. Since gouache dries so fast, think about each stroke as each one becomes a layer that makes up the painting
